Politickos

An interesting column in the Calgary Herald this morning by Mark Milke.

Mr. Jack Layton, leader of the NDP, lived in CMHC government-subsidized condos back in the early 1990's. Layton, then a city councillor, and his wife, both brought in over $120,000 annual income. They were paying only $792 per month for this. Layton also only paid 8% of pretax household income on rent. Now, does this make sense to anyone? Socialist governments in BC didn't let it's own citizens live in subsidized housing unless they were paying more tax than that.

Now Jack, the hamster in my head is running and he's not liking what you're saying. Why you gotta be like that?

Mr. Layton accused Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party, Paul Martin, of causing deaths of homeless Canadian citizens by cutting low-income housing while acting as Finance Minister. Whoa whoa whoa- back up the boat. Mr. Layton, if you weren't living in subsidized housing, you could have saved a poor homeless person. They could have been living in your condo.

Jack wants to make some changes to the government of course. (The following is taken from his website).

Re-starting a 10-year national housing program to build 200,000 affordable and co-op housing units (including homes for seniors, people with disabilities and students), renovate 100,000 existing units, and provide rent supplements to 40,000 low-income tenants, many of whom are single mothers who pay a large percentage of their income in rent.

Using the large profits generated by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to underwrite low-interest mortgages for affordable housing and requiring the CMHC to change its mandate to make it easier for community-based housing organizations to get funding.

Rrrrrrrright. I don't buy it. Therefore- you have lost my vote. Shucks. Try again in 4 years. Maybe by then you'll be living in a house which YOU yourself have purchased and which you are NOT using government subsidies for. Come on... those who live in glass condos shouldn't throw rocks.

So this damn federal election is approaching. Actually, it is in 27 days. Wow. And more than half the country is more concerned about the Stanley Cup. Great priorities. Actually, I know I am more concerned about Sir Stanley coming to Calgary...
